The Criminal Law Section of the Federal Bar Association brings together federal practitioners across the country who are interested in federal criminal justice issues. Our section welcomes participation by any FBA member with an interest in federal criminal law. We especially encourage public lawyers, such as Assistant U.S. Attorneys, Assistant Federal Public Defenders, and CJA panel attorneys to join us in the most vibrant and well regarded association of federal practitioners and judicial officers. The Criminal Law Section is a wonderful way to meet other participants in our federal legal system in a highly collegial, intellectually rich, and professionally diverse organization.

The Section sponsored wonderful CLE programs in 2014, including a series of events across the country commemorating the 50th anniversary of Criminal Justice Act of 1964, which funded the right to counsel for indigent defendants in federal court, and a seminar with the Tucson Chapter on Advancing Technology and the Fourth Amendment. In 2015, the Section is joining the Maryland Chapter in sponsoring a program entitled Maryland’s Legendary Criminal Cases, featuring distinguished members of the bench and bar from the past 30 years.

We have also been a key voice for the federal courts, federal public defenders, and federal criminal justice system as a whole during the unprecedented funding crisis occasioned by sequestration and related budget reductions.

Please contact us if you are interested in partnering in programming, issues, or in serving as a national board or committee member. We also encourage and welcome section members to contribute articles and other content to our section newsletter, In Hot Pursuit. This national publication is a great way to reach fellow members with issues and analysis, and we need your help in bringing rich content and through provoking issues to our members.

I look forward to a productive and interesting year, and welcome comments and suggestions.

Best regards,
Charles N. Curlett, Jr. Chair
