Model Letters to Congress

Model Letters to Congress

The National office of the Federal Bar Association needs your help. We are requesting that each chapter and its members contact Congress immediately to urge action so as to avoid the automatic budget cuts that will cripple the federal court system. Your chapter's communication with Congress is critical. This package contains information on the issue, its importance and how you can help.

Check out what the following FBA Circuit Vice Presidents had to say about the importance of getting involved….

"Sequestration will shut down New York’s federal courts for one or two days per week, will interfere with criminal trials and may entirely eliminate Constitutionally-mandated civil jury trials. It is not clear that Congress has the power to shut down a co-equal branch of government by defunding it. If swift and responsible action is not taken, we will have a Constitutional crisis on our hands."

- Raymond J. Dowd
Chair, Vice Presidents for the Circuits

"For several years, the dockets in Florida's federal courts have expanded without a corresponding increase in resources. In fact, budgets have shrunk and, due to the slow pace of appointing federal judges, the existing Judges must do even more with less. Sequestration will be devastating to Florida's federal courts and to the public who rely upon the federal courts to resolve civil disputes and handle criminal matters."

- Richard S. Dellinger
Eleventh Circuit Vice President

And lawmakers are taking notice of our efforts…
Evan Jenness, Esq. of the FBA Los Angeles Chapter sent a letter to her lawmaker and "received a call from Brian McKeon in Senator Barbara Boxer's office in DC, who called to express the Senator's gratitude for the letter that FBA-LA sent to the Senator regarding the impact of sequestration on the court. He explained that having "real world examples" of the issue was very helpful for them to have for negotiation purposes."
