Matthew B. Moreland, Director

Matthew B. Moreland began his involvement with the FBA through the Younger Lawyers Division (YLD) Moot Court Competition under a new appointment to the National FBA YLD Board of Directors. He chaired this program until 2005, and implemented two different practices: First, providing a free membership to all competitors, and second, recruiting former competitors to work on this program. Matt also served as a representative of the New Orleans Chapter’s YLD on the chapter’s Board of Directors. He performed this job individually for two years and then, with the chapter president’s permission, he composed a set of bylaws, had them approved by the chapter board, and appointed a chapter YLD board, which continues to maintain an active presence in the New Orleans Chapter by conducting a large portion of chapter programs. Matt worked diligently on programming and preparation for the chapter and was elected chapter president (2006–07). This position allowed him to strengthen relations between the chapter and national FBA while upholding the chapter’s status as the largest chapter in the country, even after the devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina. Matt continues to have an active relationship with the chapter through many of the programs, including service as co-chair of the Host Committee for the 2010 FBA Annual Meeting and Convention. Contemporaneously with his chapter work, Matt rose to the position of National YLD Chair and sat as an ex-officio member of the last Executive Committee (2005–06) before being elected to a three-year term on the National FBA Board of Directors (2006–09). After his first term on the board, he was appointed as general counsel (2009–10). The following year, he was again elected to the Board of Directors (2010-13). Matt was elected treasurer (2012-13), followed by his service as president-elect (2013–14) and president (2014-15). Matt was inducted as a Fellow of the Foundation in 2005 and as a Life Fellow in 2011. Matt’s practice at the Becnel Law Firm in New Orleans involves primarily mass torts and plaintiffs’ general litigation issues. He has experience with products liability, mass disaster recovery, antitrust litigation, and pharmaceutical litigation, resulting in appearances in federal courts nationwide. Matt teaches skills courses at Loyola School of Law in New Orleans and actively participates with his alma mater, Paul M. Hebert School of Law at Louisiana State University.
