Hurricanes Disaster Fund

Hurricanes Disaster Fund

On September 1, 2017, the Foundation of the Federal Bar Association created the Hurricane Disaster Fund to support FBA Chapters, Sections, and Divisions and legal aid and other organizations in response to the immediate need in local communities for legal assistance in the aftermath of the devastating storms. In light of the latest hurricanes, the Foundation Board voted to expand the fund to cover those.

The Hurricanes Disaster Fund will support FBA Chapters, Sections, Divisions, and Members - and local legal aid and other organizations working to provide legal services to impacted communities in the aftermath of Harvey, Irma, Jose, and Maria. A committee will administer the fund and make sure applications meet the eligibility and evaluation criteria.

Update September 29, 2017

After careful research and vetting, the Foundation's Board of Directors have selected Lone Star Legal Aid and Texas RioGrande Legal Aid to be the first two grant recipients.

These organizations have fully operational staff in place in the hardest hit areas of Texas, and are on the ground working within their communities to provide much needed legal assistance.

Update January 2, 2018

The Foundation of the Federal Bar Association issued the following final grants from the Hurricanes Disaster Fund:

Ayuda Legal Huracan Maria:  Brings together a number of organizations to provide wide-ranging legal aid service to the Puerto Rican community - both on the island and to families who have migrated to the United States due to inhospitable living conditions. Assistance includes providing advice related to FEMA, insurance, housing, and family law.

Louisiana Civil Justice Center: Acts as the official Disaster Legal Hotline, in partnership with the ABA and FEMA, for U. S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico citizens affected by Hurricanes Irma and Maria. Callers can obtain attorney and legal aid referrals as well as assistance with legal questions.

Bay Area Legal Services (BALS): Provides disaster relief legal services to low-income residents of Hillsborough, Pasco, Pinellas, Manatee, and Sarasota counties in Florida. BALS also has a close relationship with the FBA's Tampa Bay Chapter through a Pro Se Clinic at the federal courthouse in Tampa.
