Summer Law Clerk Program

Summer Law Clerk Program

Exclusively sponsored by Army JAG

The Younger Lawyers Division of the Federal Bar Association (FBA) is once again excited to sponsor the Summer Law Clerk Program (SLCP), and we invite your agency’s participation. In past years, over 25 agencies and 200 legal interns have participated in this unique program! The SLCP, exclusively sponsored by Army JAG, is designed to afford law students an opportunity to explore the practice of law for the United States through roundtable discussions and agency visits. Many students have used this program to secure jobs with the Federal government.

Throughout June and July, legal interns will have the extraordinary opportunity to visit up to three agencies and meet various agency counsels. They will also be invited to attend and participate in roundtable forums hosted by various federal agencies and federal practitioners. The roundtable panel discussions will allow your interns to ask questions directly to legal counsel about career development, agency missions and operations, and employment opportunities. The topics for past years’ roundtables included: The Department of Justice, the Department of Defense, and Careers on Capitol Hill.

The SLCP will begin with its annual “kick-off” event and orientation session from 3:00-4:30p.m. on June 14, 2018, at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, which is located at 717 Madison Place, NW, Washington, D.C. We ask you to encourage your legal interns to attend this event. Please send the FBA a list of names and email addresses of your summer interns that will attend the kick-off event. We strongly suggest that all interns arrive 30 minutes before the start of the program to clear security. Also, attendees must bring a photo ID.

Programs like the SLCP cannot succeed without extensive law student participation and agency support. Therefore, we encourage you to permit the interns working in your office this summer to participate in the SLCP and to publicize the program within your agency. In addition, we request that your office host a scheduled “agency visit,” by setting aside time for legal interns from other agencies to visit your office and learn more about the mission and function of your agency’s legal practice, as well as the opportunities available to young government attorneys. We encourage you to use whatever format and content you desire to highlight your agency’s important role; however, we suggest that you include a “guest speaker” from your General Counsel's office or another appropriate office.

Please send your list of summer law interns by June 1, 2018, to Anthony Jones at ajones@fedbar.org. Additionally, if your agency is willing to schedule an “agency visit,” please complete the attached form and email it to the FBA no later than COB June 1, 2018, specifying your agency’s point of contact. We will contact this person to confirm the visit date and time.

We sincerely appreciate your assistance and cooperation. Thanks to you, this year’s SLCP will be the most successful and rewarding program yet!

Sincerely,

Jessica Toplin and Joey Bowers
