The Younger Lawyers Division

FBAseal_YLD(1).jpgThe Younger Lawyers Division ("YLD") consists of FBA members who (i) are 36 years of age and under or (ii) have been admitted to practice for three years or less. The purpose of the YLD is to increase the interest of younger lawyers in the FBA's activities; conduct programs of interest and value to younger lawyers; and to assist in the establishment, improvement, and coordination of active younger lawyers in each Chapter and Circuit of the FBA. The YLD is governed by a National Board of Directors, with five officers.

The YLD encourages law students to participate in our many events.  They include CLEs, lectures, panel discussions, and social events, all geared to assist you in entering the federal practice. One of the YLD signature events that directly benefits law students is the Thurgood A. Marshal Moot Court Competition, held in Washington, D.C. Each year, moot court teams from across the nation are judged by highly skilled practitioners and members of the judiciary. Law students may also serve as bailiffs for the competition. The first round of oral arguments is held at the District of Columbia Superior Court. The two teams then appear before a panel of five judges at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces. This year's competition will be held on March 26-27, 2015. Registration deadline for this year's competition is January 30, 2015.  Please see the website for more information.

Another successful YLD program specifically for law students is the Summer Law Clerk Program. This program allows interns and new attorneys to interface with Federal government practitioners through lectures, panel discussions, and agency visits. Please see our website for more information.

The YLD also assists lawyers to be admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court. Each year, the FBA moves to admit qualifying members of the YLD into the Supreme Court Bar.  It is truly a wonderful event which has included a visit by a Justice for a photo opportunity.

The primary publication of the YLD is Perspectives, the YLD's e-newsletter.  YLD members are encouraged to submit articles that highlight programs and initiatives that benefit younger lawyers in the legal community. Members of the YLD also submit articles to The Federal Lawyer, providing insight into the developing fields in the federal practice.

The YLD is not just nationally focused. Many members of the YLD hold locally focused events with FBA chapters and divisions. These provide an opportunity for young lawyers to network, acquire CLE credits, stay up to date on the current trends in the law, and to socialize.

Please consider joining the YLD. Law students are invited to all of our events and we welcome your participation. For more information, please see our website. There, you can view information about our upcoming events, including the Thurgood Marshall Moot Court Competition and the Summer Law Clerk program. Contact information for officers is all provided. We hope you consider joining the Younger Lawyers Division and wish you the best of luck in law school.
