Thank you for inviting me to write about the Federal Career Service Division (FCSD). FCSD is once again becoming more active, and we would like to move forward and restructure and re-energize the Division.
Federal employees and members of the Armed Forces belong to FCSD automatically, and this includes retired personnel. Membership in this Division is free, and our budget is sourced directly from Headquarters.
All FBA members are busy! But, there are many tasks for a Division, and certainly, a place for everyone. Please consider donating only a few hours a month to help out with the many leadership opportunities, including planning CLE, reaching out to membership, or providing input to our legislative agenda. The more people who participate, the better!
Our biggest event has been the Washington, DC/Baltimore Public Service Career Fair, which has been held at George Mason University Law School in January for the past 10 years. Over 50 public service organizations and local, state, and federal government employers attend. They provide opportunities for students from the law schools of American University, University of Baltimore, Catholic University of America, University of the District of Columbia, University of Maryland, and George Mason University. FBA hosts registration for employers on its website, and FCSD hosts the employers’ luncheon. FBA also sponsors a table at the event, and FBA volunteers talk to the law students about careers in public interest law. And, sometimes we just listen to law school stories and reminisce – or re-experience the pain.
FCSD is not limited to Washington-area members. We would love to involve members from around the country. We will meet via teleconferences, so consider spending your lunchtime with us.
