A Message from the Chapter President The Del Rio Chapter of the Federal Bar
Association was initiated in July 2003. An association with a national
affiliation was desperately needed in the Del Rio Division of the Western
District of Texas. Our division has lawyers that practice from Del Rio,
San Antonio, Eagle Pass, Uvalde, Crystal City, Carrizo Springs and other
surrounding cities in the western portion of Texas. The caseload in federal
court has exploded over the last few years, necessitating ten assistant
U.S. attorneys in our division as well as over 25 probation officers.
Our division was finally granted a full time district judge sitting in
Del Rio in November of 2003. Sitting as our district judge is Hon. Alia
Moses Ludlum. The chapter caters primarily to federal public defenders,
criminal defense lawyers and CJA panel lawyers due to 90% of the docket
in the Del Rio Division being criminal cases. Our chapter holds monthly
meetings in conjunction with our district judge's monthly docket of criminal
cases. Attendees receive 1 hour of CLE credit with the programs designed
to enhance the practice of law with live speakers. Judge Alia Moses Ludlum
digests and reviews the latest cases of interest to the bar each month
at the meeting. Lunch is served after the meeting sponsored each month
by a chapter member. Our chapter is planning to sponsor a financial scholarship
to a graduating senior this May. Additionally, our chapter will co-sponsor
with the Val Verde County Bar Association a banquet with this year's theme
of "Brown vs. Board of Education" and how it has affected
our schools locally. Officer elections will be conducted in June of each
year with their term beginning with the July meeting. Ricardo E. Calderon Recent Events March
