A Tribute to Our Women Military Veterans

On May 14, 2015, the EDNY Chapter hosted a program honoring women military veterans in our community, as well as four organizations who provide services to military veterans. The event was held at the Alfonse M. D’Amato United States Courthouse in Central Islip. Plaques were also presented to the four honored organizations, as well as to the lifetime achievement award recipient, a ninety-nine (99) year-old World War II veteran. United States Senator Kristen Gillibrand, who was introduced by District Judge Joanna Seybert, provided remarks via a recorded video. Closing remarks were delivered by Magistrate Judge A. Kathleen Tomlinson.

EDNY Chapter Honors Officers of Probation and Pretrial Services
On January 21, 2015 the Eastern District of New York Chapter of the Federal Bar Association hosted a reception at the Theodore Roosevelt Courthouse in Brooklyn to honor the Probation and Pretrial Services Officers of the Eastern District of New York (EDNY). Russell L. Penzer, President of the EDNY Chapter, in making the presentations focused on the agencies’ unique contributions to the EDNY’s Pretrial Opportunity Program and Special Options Services prison diversion programs and the Supervision to Aid Re-entry drug offender court. Some 200 people, including many judges and EDNY Chapter members, attended the event.

Pretrial Opportunity Program and Special Options Services Program
On October 30, 2014, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder Jr. participated in a program in the Eastern District of New York (EDNY) addressing the EDNY’s Pretrial Opportunity Program and Special Options Services Program, two prison-alternative programs. The Hon. Joanna Seybert and the Hon. Gary R. Brown, who both serve on the Board of Directors of the EDNY Chapter, are two of the judges who preside over the Pretrial Opportunity Program, running the program in the Central Islip Courthouse.

Attorney General Holder offered high praise for the two EDNY programs, hailing the Pretrial Opportunity Program as “emblematic of the innovative, data-driven approach that lives at the heart of the Smart On Crime initiative”. The Pretrial Opportunity Program was established in the EDNY in 2012 with a goal of taking non-violent offenders with documented substance abuse problems out of the traditional sentencing and incarceration paths, and providing them with counseling and improvement programs, such as earning a graduate equivalency degree, obtaining employment or gaining college admission. Participants in the programs gave emotional and inspiring speeches as to their experiences with addiction and how the programs “saved their life”. The October 30 program was very well attended and received, including by many members of the EDNY Chapter.

2014 A Day in Federal Court
The Eastern District of New York Chapter hosted, on Tuesday, June 24, what it hopes to be its first annual “A Day In Federal Court.” The program was designed to expose summer interns working at local firms to the federal court system and the Federal Bar Association. The full day program began with a light breakfast and Welcome Remarks from Ernest T. Bartol, Second Circuit Vice President. The students were then provided with a history and a tour of the Central Islip Courthouse, which was designed by Richard Meier, and rich in architectural significance. After the tour, the students had the opportunity to meet with the Honorable A. Kathleen Tomlinson, U.S.M.J., and to observe a criminal proceeding before the Hon. Joanna Seybert, U.S.D.J. After enjoying a lunch with members of the Court – including Judges Wexler, Lindsay and Wall, Career Law Clerks Peter Ausili and Linda Johnson, Magistrate Clerical Rob Imrie, Pro Se Clerks and members of the EDNY Chapter’s Board of Directors – the students enjoyed a presentation on the United States Sentencing Guidelines given by Magistrate Judge Gary Brown. Charles Dunne, U.S. Marshal for the District, then met with the students to provide them with a history of the Marshal Service and the role of the Marshals in today’s federal court. At the conclusion of the day, the students had an opportunity to observe a jury selection for a civil trial scheduled to commence before the Honorable Leonard D. Wexler. In all, the 48 summer interns had a wonderful and educational day in Court!
