Judge Ana Reyes, the newest member of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, reflected on her path to the bench as part of the “Conversations with…” lunch series, jointly hosted by the D.C. Bar and the D.C. Chapter of the Federal Bar Association. Judge Reyes also discussed the challenges of her new job, the parts of judging that she most enjoys, and practice pointers for attorneys appearing in her courtroom.
October 11, 2023 – Conversation with Chief Judge James Boasberg
The D.C. Bar and the D.C. Chapter of the Federal Bar Association hosted Chief Judge James Boasberg as part of their “Conversations with…” series. Judge Boasberg discussed his experience working at small firms as a young lawyer, his time as an Associate Judge on D.C. Superior Court, and the challenges of his new role as Chief Judge of the District Court.
May 22, 2023 – 3rd Annual Government Investigations Seminar
Back from a COVID-induced hiatus, the Maryland Chapter and the D.C. Chapter of the Federal Bar Association jointly hosted the Third Annual Government Investigations Seminar. The event began with a fireside chat between general counsel to the Department of Homeland Security Jonathan Meyer and Homeland Security’s first general counsel, Joe Whitley.
The second panel offered a “view from the bench.” Judge Royce C. Lamberth was joined by his colleague on the District Court for the District of Columbia, Chief Judge James Boasberg, and retired Judge George Hazel of the District of Maryland. Brian Hudak, the chief of the civil division for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia rounded out the second panel.
The program concluded with a panel examining politically sensitive investigations. Moderated by Bill Pittard of Kaiser Dillon, the panel featured Andrew Goldstein of Cooley LLP, who discussed his time working for Special Counsel Robert Mueller; Kate Duval of Zuckerman Spader LLP, who offered insights drawn from a career representing individuals in high-profile congressional investigations; and Doug Letter of the Brady Campaign and former general counsel to the U.S. House of Representatives. Eric Tucker of the Associated Press rounded out the panel, bringing a journalist’s perspective to the discussion.
May 10, 2023 – 56th Annual Tom C. Clark Award Ceremony Honoring Patty Merkamp Stemler
Longtime Department of Justice lawyer Patty Merkamp Stemler received the 56th Annual Justice Tom C. Clark Award for Outstanding Government Lawyer. Ms. Stemler was celebrated for her achievements leading the Appellate Section of the Criminal Division for three decades. Attorney General Merrick Garland heralded Ms. Stemler’s long and distinguished career. Judge Beryl Howell and Judge Vijay Shanker also spoke to Ms. Stemler’s accomplishments. Judge Royce C. Lamberth presented the award.
