Simply
Southern Tour
Friday, Sept. 7
9:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
By century’s turn, Atlanta’s downtown dwellers began
to venture out Peachtree Street to Buckhead for picnics on Atlanta’s
beautiful wooded fringe. Pushing back the frontier and building
estates, progress formed an urban forest of rolling velvet lawns
and foliage. The mansions unfold along a driving tour that turns
and winds away from the fast-paced life of the south’s hub
city.
Step back in time and discover the great city of Atlanta and the
unique heritage of the South at the new Atlanta History Center Museum.
Trace the city’s heritage, meet the people of the South, and
share the true spirit of southern hospitality; the museum also tells
of the Civil War’s “Turning Point.”
Revel in the glory of the 1928 Swan House mansion designed by noted
classical architect Philip Trammell Shutze for cotton brokerage
heirs Edward and Emily Inman. Lavishly decorated with most of its
original furnishings, the house takes its name from the original
owner's fondness for the swan motif, which is repeated in architectural
detailing throughout. The Tullie Smith House, which adjoins the
Swan House, is one of the few extant pre-Civil War homes in Atlanta.
This plantation-plain homestead is the type of Yeoman farm typical
to Georgia’s Piedmont region, and stands strong as a reminder
of Georgia’s agrarian roots.
Cost per person: $65; space is limited. Departs from Atlanta
Marriott Marquis.

MLK–CNN
Friday, Sept. 7
2–5 p.m.
Your adventure begins by driving downtown, with modern towers punctuated
by older, more human-scale buildings that link to the city’s
past. Atlanta is all hustle and bustle at Five Points, while Woodruff
Park is relaxed. The combination of architecture, history, and people
creates the allure of downtown Atlanta … the “sweetest
part of the peach.” Continuing on, beautiful reminders of the
largest sporting event in Atlanta’s history, the 1996 Olympics
can be seen, including Olympic celebration gifts of outdoor art from
many countries.
The first stop will be at the CNN Center. Here you will experience
first-hand the electricity and excitement that’s involved in
creating two 24 hour all-news networks, CNN and HEADLINE NEWS. Witness
news in-the-making and the state-of-the-art technology it takes to
operate these networks. Watch the technicians, writers, editors, producers,
and on-air journalists. See how all work together to create round-the-clock
live news coverage day after day.
Next the tour travels down Auburn Avenue to the Martin Luther King,
Jr. Historic District where Dr. King was born, grew up, preached,
and was buried. Now listed on the National Register of Historic Places,
this area includes the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Social Change,
where his grave site is located, Ebenezer Baptist Church and the birth
home of MLK.
Cost per person: $57; space is limited. Departs from Atlanta Marriott
Marquis. |
